Send as alias

Alias Sending lets you sign in with one mailbox and send email using another address at the same domain. For example, you can use the SMTP login for alex@example.com to send a message with billing@example.com as the From address.

The setting applies to every mailbox on the selected domain. Enable it when those mailbox users should be allowed to send as other addresses on that domain.

Enable or disable Alias Sending

  1. Sign in to management.mxroute.com.
  2. Click Open control panel.
  3. Open Domains.
  4. Click the gear icon (Settings) beside the domain you want to change.
  5. In Domain Settings, find Alias Sending below Mail Hosting.
  6. Set the switch to On or Off:
    • On: allows mailboxes at this domain to use other sender addresses at the same domain.
    • Off: removes the domain's Alias Sending allowance. Normal sender restrictions apply.
  7. Click Save Changes.

Your change is saved only after you click Save Changes. Cancel discards unsaved changes. Reopen Domain Settings to check the saved state.

Alias Sending is separate from Mail Hosting. You can change Alias Sending without changing Mail Hosting.

Send from another address

After enabling Alias Sending, configure the address you want to send from in your email client or application:

  1. Keep your existing mailbox's SMTP login and password.
  2. Add or edit a sending identity with the desired From address at the same domain. The exact steps depend on your email client.
  3. Select that identity when composing a message.

For example, with Alias Sending enabled for example.com:

SettingExample
SMTP loginalex@example.com
SMTP passwordThe password for alex@example.com
From addressbilling@example.com

The panel setting grants sending permission. You still need to choose the From address in your email client.

Receiving mail and replies

Alias Sending does not create a mailbox, forwarder, or client identity, and it does not configure where replies are delivered. Set up the receiving address separately. For example, you could create an email forwarder from billing@example.com to alex@example.com, or give billing@example.com its own mailbox.

Existing sender verification and other sending requirements still apply. If sending fails with Sender verify failed, see the sender verification guide.

Which addresses are covered?

Alias Sending covers the exact domain you select. Enabling it for example.com allows its mailboxes to send as other addresses at example.com. It does not grant permission to send from another domain or from sub.example.com, even if you manage those domains in the same panel account.

This setting applies to all mailboxes on the domain; it does not let you choose individual mailboxes or a list of approved sender addresses. Domain aliases are a separate feature for using multiple domain names with the same email account setup.

If the setting will not load or save

  • If the switch shows Unavailable, click Reload Settings and try again.
  • If a save times out or shows Unconfirmed, reload the settings to check the current state before making another change. A timeout does not necessarily mean the save failed.
  • If an error prevents the setting from loading, do not assume Alias Sending is Off.

If the problem continues, contact support with the domain and the exact error shown. See Creating Effective Support Tickets for details.
