Expert Spam Filtering

Expert Spam Filtering is MXroute's advanced system for blocking spam from suspicious IP ranges that typically don't host legitimate mail servers. This includes residential ISPs, compromised networks, and known botnet locations.

How It Works

When enabled, Expert Spam Filtering requires SMTP authentication for email coming from suspicious IP ranges. This effectively blocks spam from botnets and compromised computers while still allowing legitimate authenticated email through.

INFO

MXroute customers who authenticate their outbound email are not affected by this system.

Managing Expert Spam Filtering

Checking Your Current Status

  1. Log into DirectAdmin
  2. Navigate to Account ManagerMXroute Expert Spam Filtering
  3. Select your domain from the dropdown menu
  4. You'll see whether Expert Spam Filtering is currently enabled or disabled

Disabling Expert Spam Filtering

Warning

Disabling Expert Spam Filtering will expose you to a barrage of spam and phishing emails from the worst networks on the internet. Only disable this if absolutely necessary and re-enable it as soon as possible.

If a legitimate mail server is being blocked with the error "Unauthenticated mail not allowed from this range," first request whitelisting at https://whitelistrequest.mxrouting.net.

Only disable Expert Spam Filtering if you absolutely must receive email from a sender that cannot be whitelisted:

  1. Follow the steps above to access the Expert Spam Filtering panel
  2. Select your domain from the dropdown
  3. Click Disable Expert Spam Filtering
  4. Changes take effect within 5 minutes

Important Restrictions

You cannot disable Expert Spam Filtering if you have email forwarders pointing to:

  • Gmail/Google (including G Suite/Workspace)
  • Microsoft/Outlook (including Office 365)
  • Yahoo Mail
  • AOL Mail
  • T-Online

This restriction protects MXroute's reputation with these major email providers.

Re-enabling Expert Spam Filtering

To re-enable protection:

  1. Access the Expert Spam Filtering panel in DirectAdmin
  2. Select your domain
  3. Click Enable Expert Spam Filtering
  4. Changes take effect within 5 minutes

If You're Having Trouble Sending Email

If you're getting the "Unauthenticated mail not allowed from this range" error when trying to send email through MXroute:

  1. Make sure SMTP authentication is enabled in your email client
  2. Verify you're using the correct username and password
  3. This error only appears when sending from a network in susranges without proper authentication

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my domain protected by default?

Expert Spam Filtering is enabled by default for all domains on MXroute. This is standard behavior designed to protect you from spam and phishing emails from compromised networks. While opting out is possible, it should only be done with full understanding of the consequences.

What happens to blocked email?

Email from suspicious IP ranges that cannot authenticate is rejected at the SMTP level. The sender should receive a bounce message indicating authentication is required.

Can I see what's being blocked?

There is no user-accessible log of blocked connections. If a legitimate mail server is being blocked with "Unauthenticated mail not allowed from this range," submit a whitelist request at https://whitelistrequest.mxrouting.net rather than disabling Expert Spam Filtering.

Will this affect my own email sending?

No. As long as you use MXroute's SMTP servers with proper authentication (as configured in your email client), your outbound email is not affected by Expert Spam Filtering.

Need More Help?

If a legitimate mail server is being blocked:

  1. First, submit a whitelist request at https://whitelistrequest.mxrouting.net
  2. Include the sending mail server's IP address and domain
  3. Wait for the whitelist to be processed

If you still need assistance after trying the whitelist form, open a support ticket with:

  • The sender's email address and mail server details
  • The exact error message they received
  • Confirmation that you've already submitted a whitelist request

Remember: Disabling Expert Spam Filtering should be a last resort due to the significant increase in spam and phishing emails you will receive.
